Daniel R. Wegman Named Chairman Of GS1 Management Board
Timothy Smucker, outgoing Chairman, will remain active Board member
BRUSSELS, BELGIUM/LAWRENCEVILLE,
NJ, May 17, 2006 – GS1, the not-forprofit
organisation that develops global standards for the identification of goods and
services across supply chains, has announced the nomination of Daniel R. Wegman
to the position of Chairman. Danny's functions took effect on May 17, 2006, at the
GS1 2006 General Assembly, in Malta.
He takes over the position held
since 2003 by Timothy J. Smucker, Chairman & Co-CEO of The J. M. Smucker Company.
Tim will remain a member of the GS1 Board of Directors. Danny Wegman is CEO
of Wegmans Food Markets, Inc., a major regional supermarket chain and one of the
largest private companies in the United States.
He graduated with honors from Harvard
University in 1969 with a degree in economics. Aside from his activities at Wegmans,
he is a former chair of the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) and remains an active
member of FMI. He is also a senior member of the Board of Trustees at the University
of Rochester, and is involved with United Way and the Hillside Work-Scholarship
Connection, a program founded by Wegmans to help reduce the dropout rate in the
Rochester (New York) City School system.
Wegmans Food Markets, Inc., a leading
supermarket chain in the northeast United States, operates 70 stores with annual
sales of $3.8 billion in 2005. The company has built an international reputation
for its overall excellence in quality, customer service and variety, and has been
